Lewis Hicks

A Nov. 22, 1855 bill of sale shows Lewis Hicks, his mother Nancy and a younger sister, Abigail, were sold to Robert Hendry of Hardee County, Fla. for $1,000. Information about what he did as a slave is not readily available. The Hendry family owned a farm in the heart of central Florida’s agricultural community.
Mr. Hicks left Hardee County sometime after Emancipation. His departure followed unspecified trouble with another man, family records show. His descendants said he was a “good man” and believe he ended up in Polk County or Jacksonville, Fla., never to be heard from again.
